“Behind every good man there is a great woman.”

When offered this opportunity to contribute to The Art of Integrity weekly column, I was humbled and excited all at the same time.  I immediately began running through the names and faces of all those amazing people who have had a positive impact on my life throughout the years.  The more names and faces I recalled the more one stood out and spoke to my heart. Though I did not choose to write about my parents, I will forever be grateful to my mother and father for teaching me the fundamentals of life and one day I hope to repay the emotional and financial investment they made in me although only one of them will be able to experience the joy.

When I was 25 years old, my father, Michael, passed away unexpectedly.  This was the earthquake of the century for me and began the slow spiraling decline of the quality and balance in my life.  By the time I was 30 I found myself in a very dark place, asking questions and looking for answers.  In March of 2006 I met the answer I didn’t even know I was looking for.  My wife, Jackey, quickly became my best friend and ultimately we were married in 2007.  This marked the beginning of my new life travelling a journey with her at my side.

Jackey is an amazing person with a challenging upbringing that far surpassed mine.  She had no father figure to speak of and while he was there some of the time, her father offered only unkind words and never fully understood his responsibility as a parent and the blessing he had been given as a father.  She and I would not make this same mistake.

Over the last half-dozen plus years, Jackey has taught me too many invaluable lessons to chronicle in this column. She has shown me how to treat and speak to others as well as how to make them feel as special as they are.  Above all, Jackey led me to the Lord and showed me that I am a uniquely talented man with so much to offer my family and our community.  She is my biggest supporter and has loved me through some incredibly challenging years, including our infant daughter’s open heart surgery as well as all the times I wasn’t sure I loved myself.  She is my rock, the glue that keeps our family happy and healthy and the quiet leader within our life together.

While 450 words is not enough to fully express the gratitude I have for my wife, my best friend and the mother of our children, I hope this brief story paints a meaningful picture of the significant woman in a man’s life  and how positively impactful she can be…when a man receives her good counsel.
