Thanksgiving is the time of year to take a step back and reflect on all of your good fortune and give thanks for the wonderful things in your life. Your list may include health, happiness, family, the opportunity for “me time,” or even your team.
Showing appreciation to your team members is an important task we, as business owners, must do. Fostering an environment of teamwork, where everyone feels they are a part of something and working together to achieve a common goal, is a great motivator. We want our team to feel empowered to grow as professionals, perform tasks at a level that represents themselves and the company well, and encourage co-workers to do the same. So how do we show appreciation and give thanks to our team?
Start with the right hire. Being able to show appreciation for team members means starting with the right ones. Make sure your new hires align with your brand vision. Keeping your team on the same page and moving in the same direction is the only way to accomplish the goals you’ve set for your business.
Guide/ lead/ mentor. It is said that with experience comes wisdom, and as leaders, we take every opportunity we can to guide, mentor and educate our team to avoid mistakes or missteps that perhaps we’ve made ourselves. We have encountered so many different situations throughout our careers and we feel it is our responsibility to share these lessons learned with our team to help them grow. We show them more than one outcome and challenge them to see which result they want to achieve. We share our experience as a learning tool for the team so they can avoid making the mistakes we already made, all the while fostering new knowledge for our employees along the way.
Trust. At Cristophe Salon Newport Beach, one of the most powerful ways to show appreciation for our team is to trust them. For example, a few weeks ago, our team of hair stylists and make-up artists styled for the Ronald McDonald House High Tea and Fashion Show fundraiser. As the salon owners, we were not at all stressed about the event, as we trusted that our team of great hires, whom we had led and mentored, would have the professionalism, knowledge and talent to create a hugely successful runway show. And they did not disappoint. We were allowed to focus on other areas of our business and give our team a chance to shine and show off their craft.
Empower. Along the same lines as trust, at some point, every business owner realizes that he or she cannot do everything. We cannot be in every meeting or read every email. We have to learn to release control a little and allow our team members to step up and take on more responsibility. As long as your team members know your business’ vision and they’ve had great training and education along the way, one of the best ways to show them appreciation and thanks is to empower them to make decisions, to do the right thing, and to help grow your business. After all, where would your business be without a team behind it?
