Island Cinema: Newport Beach

It was another typical date night: just my husband and me, a good movie, and a bucket of salty popcorn.

But when we arrived at The Island Cinema in Newport Beach, we found that we were in for a surprise.

First, we stepped up to the ticket counter where we were faced with a touch screen monitor.

When the ticket agent said we could select our own reserved seats, my 6’7” husband was impressed.

When they said that all of the seats have extra legroom, he almost cried.

Turns out we could have done the same thing before we got to the theater through Fandango.com.

How cool is that?

Next, we stepped up to the concession counter to buy our traditional large diet soda and even larger popcorn.

But instead, we found the Cinema Café, where we could order freshly made paninis, salads and wraps.

We placed our order and, after we showed them our reserved seat location, they promised to deliver our food; hot off the grill and right to our seats.

There was an entire case of ice cream, cookies and mini chocolate cakes.

Don’t worry traditionalists, if you’re wondering about your old favorites like  Red Vines or Raisinettes, they had them too.

But we knew we weren’t in Kansas anymore when we were able to choose from an excellent collection of wines by the glass and beers on tap.

We gave each other a knowing smile that means only one thing after 23 years of marriage.

We could get used to this…

The hallway to the theaters looked more like a gallery than a multiplex. You don’t generally see artwork displayed near drinking fountains or restrooms.

Inside the specially-designated “over 21 theater,” we settled in to our soft leather seats. There was plenty of room to stretch our legs and relax.

We felt as if we were screening a movie in our own personal home theater

…..with about a hundred guests invited over.

Sure. It was pricey. We paid $17.50 for our ticket. But for a first-class splurge, The Island Cinema is a hit. Besides, when was the last time you actually set your purse down on a movie theater floor without fear of it being stuck there forever?

The lights dimmed, the previews began, and we clinked our souvenir wine glasses as a toast to a date night that was anything but ordinary.
