College Graduates

“One Word: Plastics!” The Graduate

Ti’s the season of the college graduate. This spring university’s across the country will be graduating thousands of freshly minted graduates ready to set the world on fire. Back in 1967 there was a great future in “Plastics”, according to the film The Graduate. Prosperity was just around the corner, or so it seemed. How things have changed. Today, there is no clear path to prosperity. The market is very competitive for entry level employees. Not only that, but many of today’s graduates are leaving school without a clue as to what they really want to do. Therein lies the problem. Graduates today are not properly prepared to face the real world. Moreover, not having a clear picture of what professional endeavor to pursue, leaves them open to uncertainty. Finding one’s passion is a place to start. Whatever that passion is, focusing on it will yield the right result. In my mind, the key to success for new graduates is to be open to all possibilities. The traditional career path is no longer the only way to make an impact and find fulfillment. New graduates today need to be creative, inventive and entrepreneurial, regardless of what they do. Break the traditional rules once in a while, it could lead to interesting opportunities. George Bernard Shaw said it best, “Life isn’t about Finding Yourself. Life is about Creating Yourself.”

Until next time…
