Career Launch / Phase 2

“If you want to be happy, put your effort into controlling the sail, not the wind” (Anonymous)

Taking control of the “sail” is taking control of your job search and career change. Now that you have mastered the art of self-discovery as outlined in Phase 1, it’s time to move to the “Know” phase of my Career Launch model. What does it mean to “Know”?  It is the preparation, research and planning phase. Doing the research to gather all the relevant information is key to your success. How do you get started? Knowing your market place, researching possible target organizations and developing an effective marketing strategy. First, make a list of all the organizations your are interested in, potentially across many different industry sectors. This list should be extensive. The old sales philosophy of knowing the product before attempting to sell it also applies to your job search. In order to distinguish between leads which are useful and leads which are not, you must know the market, industry and sector you want to target.  Then, identify possible contacts you may have within those organizations, or secondary contacts you may have that know individuals within that list of organizations. LinkedIn is a valuable tool here. The more contacts you make, the better. These contacts should be seen as sources for information. This “contact network” is your real pipeline to success. This is all part of developing your marketing campaign/strategy. This entire process not only includes market identification, but methods of approach, upgrading your CV to fit specific career and job options/situations, interview preparation and finally salary negotiation. This phase is comprehensive and time intensive. It requires patience and determination.

Until next time…
