It is not enough to be busy, so are the ants. The question is: What are we busy about? – Henry David Thoreau
We have all worked with people who run around with a piece of paper in their hand in a constant state of panic. They wear a sign “look how busy I am”. In reality, what are they busy doing? How much have they actually accomplished? Being in the office long hours and always available is more about face time that being productive. While, I often think about the importance of face time in the corporate world, we may have taken it too far. Becoming more efficient is what’s important to increase productivity, not the number of hours we work. I’m not saying not to work hard! Everyone must work hard to achieve success. I’m saying work smarter with a focus on efficiency. What I love about the Generation Y population is their focus on work-life balance. They are willing to make sacrifices for their career, but not to the point of working 24/7. Personal time is very important. I believe this generation is more efficient, and it’s not all about their mastery of technology. It does not matter what you do for a living, plumber, doctor, accountant, etc. as you start each workday and each workweek, look for opportunities and situations to be more efficient. Rather than being “just busy”, become more mindful of your own efficiency or lack of efficiency.
Until next time…
